Maya Civilization – Early Classic Period

Four Features of a Growing Civilization

  1. Writing System (defines period).
  2. Calendrical system.
  3. Teotihuacan-Tikal Connection–>Consolidation
  4. Diversity–>Regional differences.

-This period was marked by political organizational shifts. Major cause of stress in Maya society. The ability to adapt to the stress due to political changes. This has major impacts on how sites develop.

-This period is marked by a continuity in iconographic system but symbols have different contexts.

-Historic sites from this period include Tikal, Uaxactum, Copan. These sites were focal points for population density, political and cultural influence. Presence of infrastructure denoting city occupation.
