Space Badlands (Novel First Draft, Work in Progress)

Space Badlands
Novel by Selim Bouhamidi
○ 1. Boss Status

Colorful and distasteful, oblong shapes, stoned truant – there is magic in her eyes when her lips taste the 2100 dope. Crushed together with her loved one, discarded clothes and dreck by boxy shack a mile from the big university. This is the wake of a calamity that big boys like Canary profit off of.

The more they phased out gas guzzling vehicles, the more the underground production and sales of these vehicles grew. Every week presented a new climate and economic disaster – the balm was dope, not much more needed to be done daily but numb the nerves.

Two classes exist: the moneyed and the banished. Society is bifurcated in this way with only one common allegiance: dope, preferably Canary’s dope. The moneyed no longer needed workers as all was automated to reproduce the wealth that magically stayed in their family coffers through out generations. The only upward mobility came in the drug trade and the many black market economies that existed.

The rest loved everywhere else crawling underground, scattered in the foothills, huddled together at abandoned amusement parks. Life was aimless in the extent that it was for centuries defined: no occupation was needed to occupy your time, your life, just free time that many filled in various trips.

The state of emergency was declared generations ago evolving into a tethering mess of contradictions. To thrive in life was no longer a safe ride but a crash course into darkness. Most however lived for their detached amusements and intoxication.
